    Flowfield Analysis of a Small Entry Probe (SPRITE) Tested in an Arc Jet

    Results of simulations of flow of an arc-heated stream around a 14-inch diameter 45 sphere-cone configuration are presented. Computations are first benchmarked against pressure and heat flux measurements made using copper slug calorimeters of different shapes and sizes. The influence of catalycity of copper on computed results is investigated. Good agreements between predictions and measurements are obtained by assuming the copper slug to be partially catalytic to atomic recombination. With total enthalpy estimates obtained from these preliminary computations, calculations are then performed for the test article, with the nozzle and test article considered as an integrated whole the same procedure adopted for calorimeter simulations. The resulting heat fluxes at select points on the test article (points at which fully instrumented plugs were placed) are used in material thermal response code calculations. Predicted time histories of temperature are compared against thermocouple data from the instrumented plugs, and recession determined. Good agreement is obtained for in-depth thermocouples

    One important observation from the recent Ice Giants Study sponsored by NASA was that the predicted and margined thicknesses of HEEET (new NASA TPS technology) were much greater than could be woven with the currently established loom capabilities. Since the cost of a loom upgrade would be substantial, the present work explores the entry trajectory space to determine what combinations of entry parameters would result in HEEET thicknesses that fit within the existing loom infrastructure. Toward this end, the entry trajectory space, parameterized by ballistic coefficient and entry flight path angle, was systematically explored for 45 sphere-cone geometries of 3 different radii 0.2 m, 0.3 m, and 0.4 m which covered the range from Galileo-derived probes considered in the Ice Giants Study, and a follow-on study on the possibility of using a single probe architecture (in terms of size and mass) for various destinations, including Venus, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. The entry velocities, latitudes, and azimuths at Uranus and Neptune used in the present work were taken from the Ice Giants Study. For each 3D OF trajectory generated by a NASA Ames in-house code, TRAJ, the material response and thickness were computed using another NASA Ames code, FIAT, along with a margins policy proposed by the HEEET project. In the present work, ballistic coefficients ranging from 200 kg/sqm to 350 kg/sqm were considered along with entry flight path angles ranging from -16 to -36 (primarily to allow deceleration loads to vary between 50 g and 200 g)

    Flowfield computation of entry vehicles

    The equations governing the multidimensional flow of a reacting mixture of thermally perfect gasses were derived. The modeling procedures for the various terms of the conservation laws are discussed. A numerical algorithm, based on the finite-volume approach, to solve these conservation equations was developed. The advantages and disadvantages of the present numerical scheme are discussed from the point of view of accuracy, computer time, and memory requirements. A simple one-dimensional model problem was solved to prove the feasibility and accuracy of the algorithm. A computer code implementing the above algorithm was developed and is presently being applied to simple geometries and conditions. Once the code is completely debugged and validated, it will be used to compute the complete unsteady flow field around the Aeroassist Flight Experiment (AFE) body

    Effect of Out-Gassing on the Onset of Hypersonic Boundary Layer Transition

    Prediction and control of the onset of transition and the associated variation in aerothermodynamic parameters in high-speed flows is key to optimize the performance and design of Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) of next-generation aerospace vehicles [1]. Boundary Layer Transition (BLT) characteristics can influence the surface heating budget determining the TPS thickness and consequently its weight penalty. Ablative heatshields are designed to alleviate the high heat flux at the surface through pyrolysis of their polymeric matrix and subsequent fiber ablation [2]. Pyrolysis leads to out-gassing and non-uniform ablation lead to surface roughness, both of which are known to influence the transition process. An ablator impacts BLT through three main routes: gas injecting into the boundary layer from the wall, changing the surface heat transfer due to wall-flow chemical reactions, and modifying surface roughness [3]. In preparation to Mars 2020 mission post-flight analysis, the predictive transition capability has been initiated toward hard-coupling porous material response analysis and aerothermal environment calculation

    Assessment of Laminar, Convective Aeroheating Prediction Uncertainties for Mars Entry Vehicles

    An assessment of computational uncertainties is presented for numerical methods used by NASA to predict laminar, convective aeroheating environments for Mars entry vehicles. A survey was conducted of existing experimental heat-transfer and shock-shape data for high enthalpy, reacting-gas CO2 flows and five relevant test series were selected for comparison to predictions. Solutions were generated at the experimental test conditions using NASA state-of-the-art computational tools and compared to these data. The comparisons were evaluated to establish predictive uncertainties as a function of total enthalpy and to provide guidance for future experimental testing requirements to help lower these uncertainties

    On Heatshield Shapes for Mars Entry Capsules

    The 70deg sphere-cone - the standard geometry for all US Mars entry missions - is thoroughly examined via flow field simulations at a select few peak heating points along candidate flight trajectories. Emphasis is placed on turbulent heating based on the Baldwin- Lomax turbulence model. It is shown that increased leeward turbulent heating for a 70 sphere-cone flying at angle of attack is primarily due to the discontinuity in curvature between the spherical nose cap and the conical frustum - the attachment of the sonic line at this sphere-cone junction leads to a supersonic edge Mach number over the leeward acreage. In an attempt to mitigate this problem of elevated turbulent heating, alternate geometries, without any curvature discontinuities in the acreage, are developed. Two approaches, one based on nonlinear optimization with constraints, and one based on the use of non-uniform rational B-splines, are considered. All configurations examined remain axisymmetric. The aerothermal performance of alternate geometries is shown to be superior to that of the 70 sphere-cone

    Thermal Analysis of Small Re-Entry Probe

    The Small Probe Reentry Investigation for TPS Engineering (SPRITE) concept was developed at NASA Ames Research Center to facilitate arc-jet testing of a fully instrumented prototype probe at flight scale. Besides demonstrating the feasibility of testing a flight-scale model and the capability of an on-board data acquisition system, another objective for this project was to investigate the capability of simulation tools to predict thermal environments of the probe/test article and its interior. This paper focuses on finite-element thermal analyses of the SPRITE probe during the arcjet tests. Several iterations were performed during the early design phase to provide critical design parameters and guidelines for testing. The thermal effects of ablation and pyrolysis were incorporated into the final higher-fidelity modeling approach by coupling the finite-element analyses with a two-dimensional thermal protection materials response code. Model predictions show good agreement with thermocouple data obtained during the arcjet test

    Excited State Chemistry in the Free Stream of the NASA IHF Arc Jet Facility Observed by Emission Spectroscopy

    Spectroscopic measurements of non-equilibrium emission were made in the free stream of the 60 megawatts Interaction Heating Facility at NASA Ames Research Center. In the visible near infrared wavelength region, the most prominent emission was from molecular N2, and in the ultra violet region, the spectra were dominated by emission from molecular NO. The only atomic lines observed were those of copper (an erosion product of the electrodes). The bands of the 1st Positive system of N2 (if B is true then A is true) differed significantly from spectra computed spectra assuming only thermal excitation, suggesting overpopulation of the high vibrational states of the B state of N2. Populations of these high vibrational levels (peaking at v (sub upper) equals 13) of the N2 B state were determined by scaling simulated spectra; calculations were performed for each upper vibrational state separately. The experimental-theoretical procedure was repeated for several radial positions away from the nozzle axis to obtain spatial distributions of the upper state populations; rotational symmetry of the flow was assumed in simulations. The overpopulation of the high vibrational levels has been interpreted as the effect of inverse pre-dissociation of neutral atoms in the N2 A state, which populates the N2 B state through a level crossing process at v (sub upper) is greater than 10

    Rough-Wall Turbulent Heat Transfer Experiments in Hypersonic Free Flight

    Experiments are being conducted in the NASA Ames Hypervelocity Free Flight Aerodynamic Facility to quantify the effects on turbulent convective heat transfer of surface roughness representative of a new class of 3D woven thermal protection system mRough-wall turbulent heat transfer measurements were obtained on ballistic-range models in hypersonic flight in the NASA Ames Hypervelocity Free Flight Aerodynamic Facility. Each model had three different surface textures on segments of the conic frustum: smooth wall, sand roughness, and a pattern roughness, thus providing smooth-wall and sand-roughness reference data for each test. The pattern roughness was representative of a woven thermal protection system material developed by NASA's Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology project. The tests were conducted at launch speeds of 3.2 km/s in air at 0.15 atm. Roughness Reynolds numbers, k+, ranged for 12 to 70 for the sand roughness, and as high as 200 for the pattern roughness. Boundary-layer parameters required for calculating k+ were evaluated using computational fluid dynamics simulations. The effects of pattern roughness are generally characterized by an equivalent sand roughness determined with a correlation developed from experimental data obtained on specifically-designed roughness patterns that do not necessarily resemble real TPS materials. Two sand roughness correlations were examined: Dirling and van Rij, et al. Both gave good agreement with the measured heat-flux augmentation for the two larger pattern roughness heights tested, but not for the smallest height tested. It has yet to be determined whether this difference is due to limitations in the experimental approach, or due to limits in the correlations used. Future experiments are planned that will include roughness patterns more like those used in developing the equivalent sand roughness correlations.aterials being developed by NASA's Heatshield for Extreme Entry Environment Technology (HEEET) project. Data were simultaneously obtained on sand-grain roughened surfaces and smooth surfaces, which can be compared with previously obtained data. Results are presented in this extended abstract for one roughness pattern. The full paper will include results from three roughness patterns representing virgin HEEET, nominal turbulent ablated HEEET, and twice the roughness of nominal turbulent ablated HEEET. Results will be used to compare with commonly used equivalent sand grain roughness correlations
